A “Thornhill Community Safety Committee” has been chartered. The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) will also be assisting this committee as they move forward.

The Committee Members are as follows:

  • Fred Fisher
  • Rosemary Bonawitz
  • Gina Shay
  • Alfred Gallimore
  • Scott Black
  • Pat Morgan-Glenn
  • Betsy Shuster
  • Danny Paulson

PV Archer will Chair the Committee as a facilitator and will participate in discussions upon request by the committee members

The Committee will solicit and participate in community information gathering on committee topics, so please watch for the opportunities to express your opinions and share your ideas with the committee in the coming weeks.

We are looking for effective and efficient delivery of the recommendations from the committee within 60-90 days. That timeline is subject to modification upon mutual agreement between the committee and the Board if, after their second meeting, they feel that more time is needed.

Please keep in mind that individual efforts, petitions, and approaches to CDOT could negatively affect the Committee’s ability to seek whole neighborhood input and effectively represent Thornhill’s needs to CDOT. We respectfully ask that this Committee be allowed to do the task with which they have been charged.

Elmstone Options Print

The following is the description associated with the CDOT options presentation that was presented to the Traffic Safety Committee by CDOT on 9/24. These are the options the City is presenting as those things they believe will address some of the concerns raised by Thornhill residents and that CDOT is willing to install at their expense.

The Summit Tree recommendation is to add curb extensions on both East and West side of the intersection allowing cars on Summit Tree to move out toward Elmstone to improve line of sight. The curbing would create new flow patterns in and out of Summit Tree. The Stop Sign could be moved forward and by moving the cars to the center of Elmstone, the theory is that those leaving Summit Tree would see cars on Elmstone earlier hopefully avoiding near misses. Extensions would be available for landscaping; there would be a ramp in the western extension to shorten the crossing distance to the other side of Elmstone. And the East side would include paint striping to alert motorists of the coming curbing.

Elmstone at Summit Tree Option

At Thornhill Club Drive and Elmstone, the CDOT recommendation involves two short concrete islands and associated paint striping. The shape and intent is to slow traffic by moving it in a slight curve to the south when coming from either direction. It can also make left turns from Elmstone to Thornhill Club more of a 90º turn, easing the movement of traffic from Thornhill Club to Elmstone. There is a curb extension on the north side of Elmstone across from Thornhill Club to assist in the movement of traffic in the prescribed arc. A ramp through this extension and one through the easterly island is meant to give pedestrians shorter exposure to traffic by establishing way stations across Elmstone. Note that there is also a slight arc set up on the South side of Elmstone at Thornhill Club that may necessitate some modification of the island at Thornhill Club Dr.

Elmstone at Thornhill Club Option

As mentioned, these are the recommendations from CDOT that, if accepted, would be installed by the city. You should shortly hear from the Committee regarding other options.
